Pedestrian struck, killed by woman under the influence, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — A pedestrian has been struck and killed by a woman who was driving under the influence, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police said they were called to North Sharon Amity Road, between Central Avenue and Wilora Lake Road, shortly after 5:30 a.m. Friday.

At the scene, police said they found an unconscious pedestrian in the roadway near a damaged black 2014 Nissan Sentra. Police said the person, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene. The driver of the Nissan, later identified as Leslie Denise Haney, was not hurt in the crash.

Investigators believe the person was crossing the intersection of North Sharon Amity Road and Central Avenue when they were hit by the car Haney was driving.

Police said Haney entered the intersection after speeding through a red light. Haney was also revealed to have been impaired at the time of the collision.

It is unknown if the pedestrian was also impaired, but CMPD said a toxicology report is pending.

Haney has been charged with second-degree murder, felony death by motor vehicle and felony possession of a controlled substance, according to investigators.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Detective Crum at (704) 432-2169, extension 4.
