Police: 1 dead, 1 critical in crash on I-85 in Gaston Co.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — One person is dead and another in critical condition after a wreck on Interstate 85 in Gaston County.

The crash occurred on I-85 north at Edgewood Road.

The Gastonia Fire Department and Crowder's Mountain Fire & Rescue responded to the crash.

According to a release from the Gastonia Fire Department, the accident occurred when the driver of a pickup truck with two occupants lost control of the truck, causing it to overturn. When the truck came to rest on its wheels, one of the occupants had been ejected. The other occupant was entrapped in the wreckage.

Rescue crews used hydraulic tools to remove the door and free the occupant from the wreckage. The occupant was transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Despite efforts of rescue personnel on the scene, the person who was ejected from the truck died at the scene.

Chopper 9 flew over the scene where a truck could be seen crashed off the highway.

DOT officials said the ramp near the crash could be closed until 6 p.m.
