Police said a Hyundai Santa Fe was heading south on Sam Wilson Road when it ran into the back of 34-year-old Johnny Wayne McKinney, who was also riding in the southbound lane. The impact threw McKinney several feet into the air, investigators said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said that section of Sam Wilson Road is dark, with no street lights, and that McKinney was not wearing any reflective clothing or a helmet. Operating a bicycle at night without lights and not wearing reflective gear are contributing factors in the crash, investigators said in a release.
The driver was not impaired and was not speeding, according to CMPD.
The crash had closed Sam Wilson Road near Performance Road in a stretch between Moores Chapel Road and I-85 while officers investigated.
