CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said speed may be part of the reason for a deadly crash in the University area Saturday.

Police said they were called just after 8 p.m. for a crash at the intersection of East Mallard Creek Church Road and Alexander Glen Drive. When they arrived, officers said they found a Honda motorcycle with damage to its front and a Nissan Altima with damage to its driver’s side.

Investigators said the car was stopped on Alexander Glen Drive at East Mallard Creek Church Road trying to make a left turn onto East Mallard Creek Church Road. When it tried to turn left, police said the car crossed in front of the motorcycle. The bike collided with the car’s driver’s side.

Investigators said the person driving the car stayed at the scene after the crash. They were not hurt, according to police, but the motorcycle’s driver, who was later identified as 21-year-old Jacob James Castor, was lying in the road seriously hurt.

When paramedics arrived, they took Castor to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Police said they believe Castor’s speed was part of the reason for the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about this case is asked to call Detective Kupfer at 704-432-2169, extension 1. The public can also leave information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or by clicking here.
