Third arrest made in Rock Hill robbery, murder plot

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Rock Hill police have arrested a third person accused of plotting a robbery and murder in South Carolina.

Officers told Channel 9 that they arrested 17-year-old Terrik Roddey on Wednesday, after arresting two South Pointe High School students earlier in the week.

It was unclear whether Roddey was also a student at the school.

Capt. Mark Bollinger with Rock Hill Police said that the chain of events the department pieced together over the past week is alarming, but was handled quickly before anyone was hurt.

The investigation began Dec. 16.

Bollinger said police were on the grounds of South Pointe High School for an unrelated matter when officers learned of several guns being kept in a student's car in the parking lot.

That student was identified as 18-year old Demarion McCrorey, who Bollinger said had three assault rifles, a hand gun and marijuana in his trunk.

"I don't remember anybody having three assault rifles in their car at one time, so that's a little bit scary," Bollinger said.

After arresting McCrorey, police discovered he and 17-year-old Brandon Scruggs, another South Pointe High student, and Roddey planned to steal guns from Van Wyck Sporting Goods in Van Wyck, then come back to Rock Hill to rob and murder someone.

Bollinger wouldn't say who the three suspects were targeting, or their motive, but did say that no one at their school was ever in danger.

"We were able to confiscate the weapons, remove him from the campus without the school being disrupted at all," Bollinger said.

McCrorey and Scruggs have both been charged with two counts of criminal conspiracy.

Officers charged McCrorey with simple possession of marijuana and possession of weapons on school grounds.

Roddey has been charged with two counts of criminal conspiracy.

Investigators said they are not looking for any other in connection with the case.

Rock Hill Schools released the following statement:

"Rock Hill schools stress this had nothing to do with the school, no students were in danger.  The weapons were found in a car on campus.  There was no attempt to do anything at school as has been learned through the investigation- those involved also had no intentions to do anything or use the weapons on campus.  On Friday night a notification was sent to all South Pointe Families about the incident."
