MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The desperate search continues for the driver who hit and killed a man in Mooresville Sunday night.
The driver left William Byers to die on Patterson Avenue.
Channel 9 reporter Glenn Counts spoke to Byers' father, who is left pleading for answers in his son’s death.
Willie Byers and his son were very close. He never imagined that the last time he saw him Sunday afternoon would be the last time he would see him alive.
Now he wants police to find the person responsible.
"It would mean a lot to me, I would love to know," Willie Byers said.
After William Byers was struck and killed, the driver sped off. Mooresville police are looking for that driver.
"Right now we have limited information on our suspect vehicle other than it being a small passenger vehicle,” Mooresville Police Maj. Gerald Childress said. “This occurred in the evening … not a whole lot of light there on the streets."
Willie Byers is haunted by the thought that perhaps the driver could have helped.
Police said the car probably has some front-end damage from the accident, but they don't know the color or the model of the car.
Willie Byers said the driver has no excuses.
"When you do something like that, you are supposed to stop and see what happened. OK, if it's nothing but a dog, stop and see what happened. It's a human being," Willie Byers said.
It was very dark out there Sunday night and the lighting wasn't great. So that's why police don't have much to go on.
Police are hoping that someone out there can provide this family some closure.
