Sister defends corrections worker accused of helping inmate escape

ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — Relatives of a woman accused of helping a prison inmate escape over the weekend argue Kendra Miller is innocent.

Kieonda Miller Parker was nervous about speaking out but wanted to stand up to defend her big sister Kendra.

"This is totally out of my sister’s character. Myself and my family feel like these charges are fraudulent," she said.

Relatives were blown away when police arrested the 33-year-old corrections officer, accusing her of having a sexual relationship with Kristopher McNeil and helping him escape from prison.

Her family has talked to her in jail.

"She's denying it, she's like ‘this is not right, this didn't happen and I don't understand why they're doing this to me,’" said Parker.

After a full day of watching her face on TV, they wanted to show a photo of the Kendra they know, a devoted single mother of four.

"My sister loves her kids; she wouldn't do any to jeopardize being away from her children. She goes to every basketball game," Parker said.

Now Miller is missing her children while behind bars on a $500,000 bond. Authorities told Channel 9 she came to her job as a food services employee at the prison and waited outside the fence with a getaway car for McNeil who was serving a 14-year sentence for 2nd degree murder.

Warrants say Miller 'engaged in a sexual act' with McNeil and gave him a cellphone.

"Do you believe your sister had a relationship with this inmate?" Reporter Brittney Johnson asked.

"No, she has a boyfriend who she is totally in love with and he is standing beside her behind her 100 percent," Parker said.

So are community members. The family says many are bringing donations to the family and chipping in online to help raise money to set Miller free.
