Wesley Heights residents hope tap water stays clear

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wesley Heights neighbors said they're fed up with Charlotte Water after dealing with brown water in their homes several times, and they finally got some help when they turned to Channel 9.

Residents said they saw crews running the hydrants and taking samples of the water, but they’re afraid it will happen again.

"Myers Park doesn't go through this. Ballantyne doesn't go through this. I'm just calling a spade a spade," Gregory Patton said.

The Patton family has lived on South Summit Avenue in the Wesley Heights neighborhood since 1965.  Gregory Patton said he and his father can remember numerous times that their water looked more like tea, including the last few weeks.

They said they bought jugs and bottles of water because they were too scared to drink it.

"For anybody to be subjected to contaminated or dirty water, that's just uncalled for in this day and time," he said.

"We had to go buy a lot of water for three weeks and everything. We were telling those people, ‘Ya'll didn't even offer us a bottle of water, man,’" neighbor Larry Moore said.

Last week, Channel 9 took the issue to Charlotte Water officials. They blamed the discoloration on crews working on service lines in the neighborhood.

After Channel 9’s report, residents said Charlotte Water supplied them with bottled water. Now, Moore said his water is starting to clear up, but he's not sure it'll last.

"Had we not called ya'll, our water would still be straight dirty right now. It just got cleaned the day before yesterday," he said.

Residents said despite this latest improvement, they have to constantly keep water because they said the water won't stay that way.

Jennifer Frost, from Charlotte Water, told Channel 9 Thursday the rehab project and service line replacement work in the area are done, and the department hopes crews don't have to return to South Summit Avenue again.
