Rock Hill Fire: Man jumps from second story balcony after apartment fire

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A man was forced to jump out of his second floor apartment after a fire started at a Rock Hill apartment complex Thursday afternoon.

The fire started just before 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Brittany Place Apartments. Officials said the Rock Hill Fire Department had a fire truck out on the road, one minute away at the time of the fire.

"When units arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke and flames," Rock Hill Deputy Chief of Operations Mark Simmons said.

Officials said a man jumped from second story balcony to escape the fire, but had non-life threatening injuries.

Resident Laketra Campbell lived in the complex with her 17-year-old son, but the water used to put out the fire damaged her home and she had to move out.

"When I got here, fire was everywhere and they said the guy jumped out of the back of the balcony," Campbell said. "I never thought I would have to experience anything like this."

Campbell said she was not home when the fire started, but rushed home and saw firefighters treating the man who jumped from his second floor apartment.

"When I got here, he was laying on the ground and they had cold compresses on his back," Campbell said.

Campbell said she may have lost furniture and clothes, but she is OK and thankful to the Rock Hill firefighters.

"They made sure I was OK. They made sure I had everything I needed," Campbell said. "Things can be replaced. I'm just glad that no one is hurt and no one lost their lives yesterday. It's just a blessed situation."

Officials said the Red Cross is helping Campbell and the apartment complex is looking for another apartment for her.

Firefighters said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
