CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Residents in southeast Charlotte were left rattled Friday afternoon following a shootout between occupants of two vehicles along Independence Boulevard near Bojangles Stadium.
Police said Dred Davis, 22, fired shots from an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle at a car being driven by his ex-girlfriend, whose new boyfriend was at her side.
It is not clear if Davis knew that his 1-year-old son was also in the car.
“It's just crazy,” motorist Sonya Neely said. “You would never think that would happen on a busy street like this."
The woman's new boyfriend returned fire, though no one was shot and no one was injured, police said.
"He could have killed his own son and someone else’s child and other innocent bystanders,” motorist Ashley Sloan said. “I don't think he was thinking at all."
Davis sped away from the scene and struck another car, police said. He allegedly ditched the rifle in a storm drain, but officers recovered it.
Davis was later arrested.
