FORECAST: Winter weather forces school closures, delays in mountains

Forecast highlights:

  • The last bit of rain was moving out of the region early Wednesday, and we will enjoy plenty of sunshine around Charlotte this afternoon
  • Temperatures will be much colder than yesterday, with highs only reaching the lower 50s
  • Avery County and Watauga County Schools will be closed Wednesday due to winter weather in the area
  • Ashe County Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay because of winter weather
  • Dry conditions will hang around through Thursday before more cold rain returns on Friday morning
  • The mountains will see a brief wintry mix early Friday, but it will be rain elsewhere
  • Drier weather returns by Saturday afternoon and temperatures will warm up to near 60 degrees
