Powerful, deadly storms unleash wind, rain, floods, possible tornadoes

Strong storms moved through our area, prompting tornado and flash flood warnings. Our expert team of meteorologists were tracking a line of severe weather that’s toppled trees, torn off roofs and flooded roads.

The National Weather Service is on its way to our area to figure out if tornados touched down and caused all the damage.

While the rain later slowed down, the threats did not. The big concern late Thursday night and into Friday is flooding in our rivers and creeks. Several school districts canceled or delayed classes Friday.

The storms killed at least two people in our area.

Thursday’s severe storm warning and watch updates:

  • Flash flood warning for Mecklenburg and Union counties until 1 a.m. Friday.
  • Flash flood warning for Gastonia, Mount Holly and Belmont until 1 a.m. Friday
  • Flash flood warning for Chester and York counties until 1 a.m. Friday.
  • Flash flood warning for Alexander, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties until 8:45 p.m.
  • Flash flood warning for Anson, Richmond and Stanly counties until 7 p.m.
  • Flash flood warning for Chester and York counties until 7 p.m.
  • Flash flood warning for Mecklenburg and Union counties until 7 p.m.
  • Areal flood warning for Cabarrus County until 1:45 a.m. Friday
  • Areal flood warning for Rowan County until 11:00 p.m.
  • Areal flood warning for Burke and Caldwell counties until 7:15 p.m.
  • Severe thunderstorm warning for Chesterfield County until 5:45 p.m.
  • Severe thunderstorm warning for Chesterfield and Lancaster counties until 4:45 p.m.
  • Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Anson, Richmond and Stanly counties until 4:15 p.m.
  • Tornado warning was issued for Rowan County until 11:30 a.m.
  • Tornado warning was issued for Cleveland County until 11:45 a.m.
  • Tornado warning was issued for Gaston and Mecklenburg counties until noon.
  • Tornado warning was issued for Cabarrus and Rowan counties until 12:15 p.m.
  • Tornado warning was issued for Stanly County until 1:15 p.m.
  • Tornado warning was issued for Mecklenburg and Union counties until 12:45 p.m.
  • Tornado warning was issued for Cabarrus County until 1 p.m.
  • A confirmed tornado was reported east of Kings Mountain in Gaston County around 11 a.m.
  • A confirmed tornado was reported in Kannapolis around 11:45 a.m.
