ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Troopers are investigating a deadly hit-and-run collision after finding a body along the side of a road in China Grove early Thursday.
Authorities were called around 3 a.m. to the scene on Camp Road, off U.S. 29 when someone called 911 after finding shoes and broken glass in the road.
When deputies arrived, they found the body of 66-year-old William Odell Lea down an embankment.
The vehicle that hit Lea did not stop. Troopers think the collision happened sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. and are asking anyone who may have information about the crash to call them.
The Highway Patrol does not know the make or model of the vehicle but said it would have damage to the front right corner.
Troopers had the road blocked for a few hours while they investigated, but it was reopened by 6 a.m.
