UNCC students 'inconvenienced' by another delay in off-campus apartment construction

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of UNC Charlotte students are still living in hotels, while their apartment complex remains under construction.

Eyewitness News reporter Elsa Gillis has been pushing for answers from the complex, Haven 49, since August.

Some of the students have been placed about 20 miles from campus in hotels in south Charlotte.

"Just the not knowing what is happening, it’s taking a toll on them a little bit,” parent Stacey King Neal said.

Neal said she has three UNCC students living in her basement, her son and two friends who have been there since August when they were supposed to move into their off-campus apartment complex.

"Since that time, there's been six to seven delays coming from the apartment complex,” Neal said.

In the meantime, student Harrison Carlin has been staying in a hotel and has had to move twice.

“It's just been extremely inconvenient,” Carlin said.  "We moved one weekend because of the NASCAR race, they moved us to another hotel, and then back into the hotel we were already in."

When Channel 9 contacted Haven 49's office for answers, the complex directed Channel 9 to its public relation’s firm.

Carlin shared a recent apologetic note from the complex where they acknowledge the persistent delays and say, “While most of the project is finished, certain requirements have not been met” and “Not enough has been accomplished to allow for occupancy."

Apartment officials then said, “We expect the project to be ready on Oct. 20, but there is a chance it could slip to the following week."

"Truth and transparent would take a lot of stress off this situation,” Neal said.

"It'd be nice if they just sat us all down, and say, ‘Hey, they haven't had like a Q and A, like if anybody has any questions, wants to voice their concerns,’” Carlin said.
