STATESVILLE, N.C. — Statesville police are investigating vandalism at a centuries-old cemetery.
As many as 10 gravestones have been vandalized or destroyed over the past three weeks at the Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, officials said.
Vandals have been knocking over and spray-painting the gravestones, resulting in $50,000 worth of damage.
"You feel bad for the deceased being disgraced, but also the family members not only financially and emotionally," resident Nicole Ritchie said.
The city is still working to contact all of the family members. Some of the destroyed graves honor people who have been buried in the cemetery for up to 80 years.
The city of Statesville is working with a company to repair two of the graves that were damaged during the vandalism.
No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call Statesville police.
