Volunteers at Concord ranch care for adults, kids with special approach

CONCORD, N.C. — For 25 years, volunteers at a local ranch have cared for kids and adults in a unique way.

Chris Cronin serves at Wings of Eagles Ranch in Concord. The nonprofit is a self-proclaimed center for hope; they support families with children who have special needs, as well as adults and at-risk youth.

They mainly use horses to improve motor skills, build strength and let kids be kids. But they also use other activities like rope swings, zip lines and art in the great outdoors to reinforce their mission.

Alexis and Daniel Stogden enrolled their 8-year-old son Rylen for his second year. He’s on the autism spectrum and has at least seven other issues or disorders.

“The idea for us was to see him experience normal things,” Alexis said. “We’d get to see him on a horse -- typical things.”

It’s made such an impact that Rylen’s parents are now volunteers too.
