ROCK HILL, S.C. — Dozens of College of Charleston students are making Winthrop University their home away from home as they ride out Tropical Storm Irma.
About 60 students and some faculty from Charleston arrived at Winthrop University on Friday to escape the storm. Some of the students are from out-of-state or even out of the country.
Winthrop University has sectioned off one of the ballrooms for the College of Charleston students and have brought in beds and given everyone free meal tickets.
Many of them said they had also evacuated in 2016 when Hurricane Matthew hit.
College of Charleston student Sabrina Harris said they’re keeping up with the flooding as the storm surge hits the city.
“We are definitely going to be flooded, so we’re hoping for the best. I’m hoping it’s going to be minimal and not a lot of damage to the dorms,” Harris said.
The students are hoping to head back to Charleston Tuesday, but that decision has not been made yet.
