CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — The controversy over a homosexual slur continued at the Mecklenburg County commission meeting Tuesday night.
Mecklenburg County commission chair Jennifer Roberts did what she promised, separating seats for commissioners Bill James and Vilma Leake. They were moved apart from each other for the first time Tuesday night.
Commissioners were discussing domestic partner benefits last month. During the discussion, Leake said her son died from AIDS. James then asked if he was "a homo."
Thus far, James has refused to apologize for the remark.
Tuesday, Roberts said there is no place for name-calling at meetings.
"There are certain words which we know to be inflammatory, hateful, bullying and provocative," she said.
Roberts said she will not ask commissioners to censure James.
Neither James nor Leake said anything publicly about the topic Tuesday night.
