ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. — A roadside cleanup crew supervisor who suffered a stroke on the job last week and had inmates come to his aid has died.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that the Bladen County Sheriff's Office announced Monday that 62-year-old James Smith died. Smith collapsed Jan. 2 and died Sunday morning.

Authorities say inmates Frank Edens Jr., Rosendo Morales-Sanchez and Roy William Smith helped Smith. They grabbed his cell phone, called 911 and waited until law enforcement and emergency medical personnel arrived.
Sheriff James McVicker awarded the three with life-saving awards, calling them "good men."
