RALEIGH, N.C. — Democrat Hayden Rogers has won a primary election to replace his former boss in North Carolina's 11th Congressional District.
Rogers will face the winner of a GOP runoff between Mark Meadows and Vance Patterson. That's because both candidates failed to land at least 40 percent of the votes.
Unofficial results Tuesday show Rogers, former chief of staff for 1994 first-round NFL draft pick Heath Shuler, beat out Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell and Tom Hill. Shuler announced earlier this year that he was retiring.
With 97 percent of the precincts reporting, Meadows, a real estate investor, has 38 percent of the vote, while Patterson, a business owner, had 24 percent. They will face off in a runoff this summer.
Eight Republicans ran for the open seat in the sprawling district.
