Summer Camp Boosts Kids' Reading Skills

STATESVILLE, N.C.,None — Scotts Elementary School, in partnership with Iredell-Statesville Schools' Prime Time program, is offering students fun, experimental opportunities while boosting their reading abilities.

Scotts is hosting a two-week summer reading camp for rising third- through fifth-graders.

Principal LeAnne Hall said the camp allows students to maintain the knowledge they gained during the school year.

"The continuation of reading skills during the long breaks is a valuable strategy in becoming an excellent reader," she said.

Student Plaj-Pais Yang, 10, said he's gotten the chance to read additional books during the camp.

"You get to read more books," he said. "(Reading) helps you pass the EOG test."

Thirty-five campgoers rotate in and out of reading groups in the mornings, which are led by four certified teachers, each focusing on a different aspect of reading, such as fluency and vocabulary. During the afternoon, students participate in reading activities and Readers Theater.

"We are doing everything we can to provide opportunities for students who want and need to improve in their reading, Hall said.

This year's inaugural camp culminates Thursday with a student-produced play titled "Ick, I'm Sick!" The aim of the hour-long, two-scene performance is to enhance students' reading abilities through acting.

"In the busyness of summers sometimes we forget to focus on school work and this is an opportunity for them to get work in and have some fun," Hall said.

Rising fourth-grader Nicole Feijoo, 9, said reading camp has made learning fun and strengthened her reading skills.

"It helps me read better," she said.

Hall anticipates a second reading camp in 2012.
