The pace of new U.S. infections appeared to slow ever so slightly, however, with the latest 1 million nationwide cases accumulating over six days as opposed to the four days it took for the tally to increase from 17 million to 18 million.

Meanwhile, virus-related deaths in the United States also swelled Sunday to more than 333,000, representing nearly 19% of the slightly more than 1.76 million global COVID-19 fatalities recorded to date.

The three hardest-hit states remain California with more than 2.1 million cases, resulting in 24,235 fatalities; Texas with nearly 1.7 million cases, resulting in 26,969 fatalities; and Florida with nearly 1.3 million cases, resulting in 21,212 fatalities. Illinois and New York follow closely behind with more than 937,000 cases and more than 922,000 cases, respectively.

Seven other states have reported at least 508,000 cases, including Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, North Carolina, Michigan and Wisconsin.
