The Town of Matthews plans to meet Tuesday to discuss possible treatment plans for blue-green algae.
Squirrel Lake Park Pond is one of eight that tested positive for the dangerous algae in the Charlotte area.
“Staff is looking at this with several options we have available,” said Mayor Paul Bailey.

Squirrel Lake Park is one of three ponds that was tested in Matthews. The town said the ponds at McKee Road and Pleasant Plains Road tested negative, but town leaders said they’ll continue to monitor those ponds.
“We’re making sure we have them all covered,” said Mayor Bailey.
Some areas are using a liquid copper solution to get rid of the algae. The mayor of Matthews said they’re looking at a few options, but are also being cautious.
“The other solutions could be detrimental to the wildlife and what not,” he said.
Mayor Bailey said his preference is to wait until cooler weather kills the algae.
Other areas that tested positive for the algae include Park Road Park in Charlotte, Belle Johnson Community Center in Pineville, and two different ponds at Robins Park in Cornelius.
This alga is usually found in stagnant water and caused by the summer heat. This alga can be deadly for dogs. It’s also bad for humans, as it can release toxins that attack the liver if it’s ingested.
“I heard that it’s really dangerous it can cause a lot of harm to your pets if they go in the water, it can cause rashes on your skin if you touch the water. It’s best to just keep your pets out of the ponds," said Kyle Foray.
