Cats that escaped fatal Christmas Eve wreck reunited with victim's family

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rescue groups from across the area spent several days searching for a deadly crash victim's cats, hoping to return them to her family.

Troopers said Rachel Vidrine died in a five-car wreck near Concord Mills on Christmas Eve. When animal rescue groups learned her two cats had run from the crash scene, they spread the word online that they planned to search for them.

Volunteer Alan Main told Eyewitness News that he and his wife were driving on I-85 when they passed an accident scene near Concord Mills. When they returned home, they saw the news on social media that the crash they passed was fatal and that volunteers were searching for the deceased owner's cats, Callie and Pollie.

They joined volunteers from The Cat Smart Coalition, Paw It Forward Animal Rescue and Team Cabarrus Canine Search and Rescue and spent days searching the woods near I-85.

Volunteers purchased a thermal imaging scope to help track the cats in the wooded area.

They are raising funds to cover the cost of the equipment.

Rescuers found Callie on Dec. 30, six days after the accident. On Jan. 2, they found Pollie in a drainage culvert near I-85, 100 feet from the accident scene.

Local foster families cared for Callie and Pollie until they could be reunited with Vidrine's family.
