CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — A deputy was assaulted Monday while on the way to a call in Cleveland County, the sheriff’s office said.
It happened around 11:45 p.m. while the deputy was on Cleveland Avenue in Grover, near Kim Drive. He was trying to find a suspicious person who was involved in an assault on Cleveland Ave at Mallard Drive.
The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office said the original call was for someone who had been shot. On the way, he found Brandon Rashay Roseboro, who matched the assault suspect’s description.
Roseboro grew aggressive with the deputy, the sheriff’s office said, and hit the deputy several times. Someone passing by who was related to Roseboro helped the deputy handcuff him.
The victim of the original assault was seriously hurt and is in critical condition but was not shot, the sheriff’s office said.
In connection to the Cleveland Avenue investigation, Roseboro has been charged with:
- Assault on a law enforcement officer (felony), two counts
- Assault inflicting serious bodily harm (felony), one count
- Assault on EMS personnel (felony), one count
- Assault inflicting serious injury (felony), two counts
- Assault on government official, one count
- Simple possession of marijuana
- Communicating threats
“We appreciate the care and concern for a bystander who took immediate action in helping one of my deputies,” Sheriff Alan Norman said in a statement. “Public support is vitally important to my office.”
