12-year-old shot during Gastonia home invasion, officials say

GASTONIA, N.C. — A 12-year-old was shot in the leg during a home invasion Saturday night in Gastonia, officials said.

Police said someone kicked in the front door of a house in the 400 block of Red Tip Lane around 9 p.m.

The child, who was wounded near a knee, was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center for the non-life-threatening injury.

"I heard a gunshot," Diane Morton, who  had just returned home after walking her dog, told Channel 9. "And then the next thing I know here come the cop cars."

Neighbors said Saturday night's large police presence was unusual.

"It's really a quiet neighborhood, everybody knows everybody, we look out for one another," Randy McDonald said.

The incident has neighbors on edge.

"I have three kids so it's pretty scary," Tia Fulther said. "It makes me curious. Maybe we might need police over here or something to patrol the area.”

"You always hear about it on the other side of town," McDonald said. "This is my own street. My grandfather built this in '58 so I've been here a long time and it's just getting awful close."

Nothing was stolen and the case is still under investigation. No one has been arrested.

Anyone with information about the break-in can call Crime Stoppers of Gaston County at 704-861-8000.
