BOONE, N.C. — The children of Daryl Jenkins and Shirley Jenkins were on hand Tuesday as attorneys announced the filing of a 21-page lawsuit after the couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
During an emotional news conference the Jenkins' son and daughter said their parents had been married for 52 years, that they had recently retired and that they were the picture of health before their Boone vacation turned deadly.
Kris Hauschildt took her parents to the airport when they were on their way from Washington state to North Carolina.
"I certainly never anticipated that when I said goodbye to them on the 12th that it would be the last time I would ever see them," Hauschildt said.
The Jenkins' were staying at the Best Western Hotel in Boone in April 2013.
TIMELINE: Three deaths at Boone hotel
"I don't want anybody to ever go through what we went through, it's totally avoidable," said the couple's son, Doug Jenkins.
The lawsuit names Best Western International, the operator of the Boone hotel, a gas company and several others.
The family hopes filing it will put pressure on hotels nationwide to provide carbon monoxide detectors in every room. They say carbon monoxide monitors could have given their parents a fighting chance.

"Fifteen dollars for this little unit, that's it, and it could have saved everybody. We wouldn't be here right now," Jenkins said.
The lawsuit not only details what happened in Boone, but also other carbon monoxide poisonings, and deaths at Best Westerns and other hotels. It seeks in excess of $20,000 in damages.
