BOONE, N.C. — The North Carolina mountains got a preview of winter weather that will begin to slam the area this weekend.

The roads were so icy on Wednesday that firefighters had to rescue a group of ASU students from their car after it slid off Highway 194 and overturned.
The only way to get them out was by taking off the car's front windshield.
“I think this needs to be a lesson to everyone that they need to be taking it slow. If you don’t need to be out on the road, you shouldn’t be because obviously, things like this happen,” student Ellie McAlonen said.
ASU canceled classes starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday because of the weather. School was also called off in Watauga County.
