A man was beaten up and carjacked Wednesday night when he stumbled upon a burglary at his friend's house, police said.

Officers chased two of the suspects from south Charlotte to southeast Charlotte, where they crashed.

The victim saw a U-haul in his friend’s driveway on Leahurst Court around 11:30 p.m. and wondered what was going on, so he walked inside the house and was jumped by three men.

Two of the suspects ended up on Blair Road near I-485 after being pursued by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers.

Officials said the 19-year-old victim was hit with a gun. His BMW was also stolen. The suspects crashed the car trying to get away.

Police said the pair then tried to run away; one was caught by a K-9 officer and the other is still on the run. He was last seen near Rocky River High School.

"As long as people who are responsible for this are not in my neighborhood now, I guess it makes me feel better,” said neighbor Lisa Nagel.

The third suspect drove away in the U-Haul. He was spotted by an officer on West Boulevard near Donald Ross Road.

Officers tried to stop it on Independence Boulevard and had to give chase before the suspect stopped at the Circle K and surrendered.

"So, hearing this happen today, next to us, frankly, is very much a surprise,” neighbor Joseph Schultz said. “Nothing like this has ever happened."

Charlene Schultz and Joseph Schultz, who live next door to the house that was burglarized, believe their neighbors were out of town.

"We know the kids, since they were little, now they have two adult sons now and a daughter in high school,” Charlene Schultz said.
