Program to donate new bicycles to CMS students who earn it

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Dozens of children in Mecklenburg County will be receiving brand-new bicycles because of several programs helping them earn a successful future.

The bikes aren't just being given away. They are used as incentives to help keep children focused on building for a better future.

Employees with the city of Charlotte helped build 75 bikes on Saturday that will be given to students in the program Right Moves for Youth, a school-based dropout prevention program in 29 middle and high schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.

“I think it’s just about teaching kids and family. It’s not about ourselves,” said Chris Trull, fleet manager with the city of Charlotte. “It’s about other folks and helping other folks out, putting other people before ourselves.”

“The families that get these bicycles are often just very overjoyed, because a lot of times, students don’t have the opportunity to have a brand-new bike,” said Tayuanee Dewberry, executive director of Right Moves for Youth.

The bikes, which were donated by The Spokes Group, will be given to children at school before Christmas as a celebration of their accomplishments.

“We are about empowering students to succeed in school and graduate from high school with a plan for their future success,” Dewberry said.

The children chosen to receive a bike will have earned it by excelling in schoolwork and proving to be upstanding kids in the community.

The Spokes Group has donated almost 46,000 bikes to children in the Mecklenburg County community since 1994.

The city of Charlotte has helped put them together for the past decade.

“We’ve seen video where the kids actually get the bikes, and it’s rewarding to see a smile on the kid's face,” Trull said.
