BELMONT, N.C. — The long-planned transformation of a former textile mill in Belmont took a major step forward yesterday, with city officials there reportedly approving the creation of a conditional zoning designation specifically to allow the project.

The 117-year-old Chronicle Mill near downtown Belmont is targeted for a mixed-used redevelopment that would include upscale apartments as well as retail and commercial space.
The mill is one of several around the region undergoing or targeted for massive transformations.
