See which Charlotte-area high schools post the best ACT scores

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The ACT is a national college admissions examination that evaluates students in English, mathematics, reading and science. This slideshow counts down Charlotte-area public high schools by their composite scores in those four subject areas.

Included are public and charter schools in Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Mecklenburg and Union counties in North Carolina and Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina. Included are all public high schools in those counties with a composite score of over 19.5.

As a basis for comparison to local schools’ performance in North Carolina, the 103,899 students in grade 11 who took the ACT test in 2017-18 had an average overall composite score of 18.5 out of a possible 36 — slightly down from 18.6 in the 2016-17 school year.

For South Carolina, the 48,243 graduating seniors who took the ACT test in 2017 had an average overall composite score of 18.4 — slightly up from 18.2 in 2016.

The national average score was 21 for the 2 million students in the class of 2017 who took the ACT. That is 60% of the 2017 graduates to take the test, compared with 64% in 2016.

Data was obtained from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the South Carolina Department of Education.
