CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With pupils across the Charlotte region just starting or gearing up for a new school year, CBJ is taking a look at which local schools offer students the best chance to excel.
And many of the area’s public elementary schools that ranked among the best locally also posted a high standing in their respective state.
In its 2019 Best Public Elementary Schools ranking, Pittsburgh-based research and review site Niche.com analyzed U.S. Department of Education data on academics and student life as well as parent and student reviews to determine the top schools in each area. That takes into account factors such as state test scores, student-teacher ratio, student diversity, teacher quality, grade school ratings and the overall quality of the school district. Niche gave the highest leverage, 50%, to its academics grade; followed by a 20% weight for its teachers grade; 15% weight for its overall district grade; 10% weight for its culture and diversity grade; and 5% weight for its parent and student surveys on overall experience.
According to that measure, Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy came in as the highest-ranked public elementary school in the Charlotte metro area. The charter school also scored the highest spot in Tar Heel State.
