Townspeople hope to save old Catawba County country store

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A historic landmark in Catawba County could be torn down soon.

The Terrell Country store has been around since 1883.

Hundreds of people have already signed a petition to save the Terrell Country Store.

The owners were told they have one month to vacate. “It needs to be here,” store manager Bob Sysol said. “It’s the little town of Terrell. This is what’s left of Terrell.  So, if this is gone, there is no more Terrell.”

The store is on Highway 150 in southern Catawba County, which has seen tremendous growth recently. There are plans to widen the highway, but the Department of Transportation said the project will not affect the store.

The business said the property owner has sold the land to a developer.

Customers signed the petition but a spokesperson with Catawba County said commissioners can’t intervene because the building's historic designation was made voluntarily by private citizens.

Many of the customers hope the old store can be moved in time and plan on going to the commission meeting next month.
