Officials: One shot in road-rage incident in Concord

A 29-year-old man was shot Sunday in a road-rage incident.

People inside a Kannapolis church Sunday morning heard two cars crash outside on Orphanage Road, followed by the sound of shots being fired.

"It was frightening. It was scary," said Gail Jernigan, a registered nurse, who ran out to help. She and another good Samaritan stayed with the victim until paramedics arrived.

"I sure wouldn't want it to be one of my children. I was so sorry this boy had to go through this," Jernigan said.

Eyewitness News anchor Liz Foster talked to Kannapolis police Lt. Justin Smith, Smith said Ryan Barrett was shot by Robert Andrews, who was driving a Range Rover that was rear-ended.

A bullet casing on the ground beside an evidence marker was visible in video shot by Channel 9.

Barrett’s girlfriend was driving, and their child was in the back seat.

Police talked to Andrews before leading him to an investigator's car. As of Monday evening, he still hadn't been arrested or charged with the shooting.

"This appeared to be an isolated incident,” Smith said. “There wasn't any danger of any retaliation or danger to the public that would warrant just a probable cause arrest at that point. It was best to gather all the information we could possibly gather."

Channel 9 went to Andrews' home, just 1.2 miles from the scene of the accident. No one answered. We later reached his wife on the phone. She declined to meet with Foster and said they were waiting for the investigation to be finished.

Barrett is recovering at CMC Northeast.
