Union County deputies search for suspects in string of overnight robberies

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Channel 9 saw a man cut a fresh piece of glass in the rain Monday morning before he slid it into the door frame at Kami Chinese & Sushi in Wesley Chapel.

Shane Huang hired him to replace a piece that was shattered overnight by thieves.

Huang told Eyewitness News reporter Gina Esposito the thieves stole about $1,000.

Huang said he has owned the sushi restaurant for nearly a decade and this is the first time his business has been targeted.

"Not good. I mean this area pretty good, pretty safe," said Huang.

The Union County Sheriff's Office is investigating break-ins at Carriage Cleaners, Kami Chinese & Sushi and Subway off Weddington Road in Wesley Chapel. They are also looking into break-ins at Poppy Seed Bagels, Elite Cleaners and My Bella Spa off Chestnut Lane in Indian Trail.

In each case, the suspects smashed through the front door and looked for cash.

Investigators collected evidence from each business and looked for surveillance video to try to identify the two suspects.

Witnesses told the Sheriff's Office the suspects got away in a dark-colored sedan.

In May, Channel 9 covered a series of break-ins between Matthews and Union County in which suspects broke doors and tried to get into cash registers.

Tony Underwood, spokesperson with the Union County Sheriff's Office, said these types of crimes pop up every so often.

"We'll identify the suspects after a period of time. We usually identify them and file charges. Then another group pops up. Whether it's the same people or some of the same players, we don't know," said Underwood.

"I just hope it doesn't happen again," said Huang.
